Massive pot harvest continues
Plants’ high quality suggests caretakers of crop lived on site
TOWNSHIP 37, Maine — More than 60 law enforcement officers continued Thursday to harvest massive, high-quality marijuana plants at a remote location in Washington County. Not only is the seizure the largest in Maine’s history, the multimillion-dollar operation was the first of its kind seen in the state, according to drug enforcement officials.
The pot plantation was discovered Tuesday when a law enforcement plane scoured the area after Maine State Police Troop J received a tip on its Web site.
Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Director Roy McKinney, who was on site Thursday, said the size, scope and detail of the farming operation was quite surprising.
“We have never seen this type of operation in Maine before,” he said.
No one had been arrested as of Thursday and McKinney would not identify who owns the land.
He confirmed that it was a plantation or farm, where caretakers of the crop lived 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “These are the types of operations we see on the West Coast. In Maine, when marijuana is grown in remote locations, someone usually hikes in and checks it periodically. These growers were living right here.”
The marijuana was so well cultivated, he said, that the value of the bud, the most prized part of the plant, is higher than normal.
“This was a very sophisticated operation,” McKinney said. “There was a tremendous amount of effort and energy put into this, including extensive pruning to develop the buds. This operation was given a lot of thought.”
He said MDEA uses $2,000 per plant as the rule of thumb for street value, but since these plants’ buds are so developed, McKinney said they would likely be worth $3,000 or more each. More than $1.5 million worth of plants — 500 — were harvested Wednesday by law enforcement.
Several thousand more plants — about $9 million worth — were harvested by midafternoon Thursday. A final count will not be available until all the plants are removed, likely late Friday.
When the plane discovered the farm Tuesday, the growers on site apparently began burning several of what McKinney described as bunkhouses. By the time law enforcement on the ground arrived at the farm, no one was found.
McKinney said two additional buildings were discovered Thursday.
The site, in Township 37, is about 10 miles off Route 9 in Wesley, covering several square miles of woods and swamps. The Salvation Army has set up their canteen on site to feed the law enforcement contingent, which McKinney said was both appreciated and invaluable.
In addition to Maine and federal DEA agents, officers at the site come from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Maine State Police, Maine Game Wardens, Maine Forest Service, Washington County Sheriff's Office, and U.S. Border Patrol.
McKinney said teams of officers are working in very difficult terrain, harvesting the pot in bundles of 100 and walking through a boggy, swampy area to an access road where the plants are secured.
One garden is 100 yards from the access road while the second garden is more than 500 yards away. “This is not easy terrain,” he said.
McKinney said that Wednesday was devoted to the crime scene and securing and seeking evidence, while Thursday's action shifted to eradication of the plants.
Officers will continue working on site today and once the harvest is completed, McKinney said the plants will be destroyed on site.

The primary rule here is pretty simple: Treat others with the same respect you'd want for yourself. What does that mean specifically? Here are some guidelines (see more):
They sure are pretty. Actually, all of God's creation is beautiful. It's too bad to destroy such pretty flowers. They should be donated to cancer patients if it is such high quality.
How easy would it be for some of the officers to take a few hundred for themselves. No one would be able to tell. Lucky day to be the DEA.
Don't be to surprised if you find out that the Mexican cartel have started this operation !! Thanks to the tipster who reported it and thanks to the DEA and other law enforcement officials!
It was said on the news that the plants were being kept for evidence.....hahahaha...yeah right....legalize it, sell it and put it towards the deficit!!
high yeild weed go figure, probably clone plants.pretty high tech methods now and very good weed..legalize the green.peace
You mean it wasn't a spike in the skunk population that I been smelling all summer?
Looks like a good sized hit on this years harvest., but as most know. There will be plenty more out there that wont get caught and have some really good green this year. The DEA might have won this little battle but they will never win the war on us peacefull heads. Long live Maine Green Bud
wasted money . go after the real drugs boneheads
I agree with Freedomfighter... 9/24/09 10//36 PM post. I had a sibling who was very ill from Chemo... the pill form didn't work at all...
Quite frankly, I think marijuana should be legalized anyway. Tax the "hell" out of it. This country needs to get out of debt!! Personally, I've never smoked pot, but would much prefer to be around someone who has smoked pot rather than those who get violent when they booze it up!
IF AMERICA LEGALIZE IT THE RIGHT WAY AS COLLECT MORE TAX THAN SPENDING THE 20 TO 30 BILLIONS DOLLARS A YEAR TO CONTROL IT 'N' AS DOES MEDICAL AND/OR MENTAL ILLNESS EVER HAS A RIGHT PROTECTION ACTS ? ? ? ? ? ? ? POT, WEED, HERB, TREE, EQUAL MEDICINE EITHER WAY YOU SHALL LOOK AT IT AS OPEN AS THE BANGOR JAIL HOUSE OF SUICIDE METHODS TO VIOLATE THE MEDICAL PROTECTION ACT
Legalize and tax it. Screw Tabor, we need to pull our heads out of wherever they are and gain revenue. This stuff is not going away.
like I said earlier
you can send some here
or at least can I come down when the plants are "eradicated" (burned)
bring all the sick people in a van let them breathe in
As ill as i am i could have used a little of this; instead i will break the law and have to buy some. I understand many have moved their business from Maine to California; WHERE LAWS DON'T TURN HARD WORKING AMERICANS INTO CRIMINALS.
don't ERADICATE
DONATE
to me...or to Washington County
what a crying shame
They received a tip then flew over it with a plane? I don't think so. Why didn't they surround the area with law enforcement on the ground first and cover the roads so no one could escape? Who was in charge of calling the orders on this bust? Another case of sloppy law enforcement work. Instead they fly a plane over the area, notifying everyone on the site that they have been detected and allow everyone to escape. This does not add up. There is more to it that isn't being printed.
Yep. There is a LOT more to this story than is being reported.
Good enough for them. These guys are no angels. Found one of these places one time while hunting, and the next Saturday the keeper was standing in the middle of the patch shooting a shotgun if anyone came near. What would have happened if some hiker had stumbled upon THIS operation. Do you think they would share a few buds with the intruder and say adios?? I don't think so.
There's always more to every story...Sometimes I wish that stories like this were kept on the DL until the bad guys are caught.
legalize it i say. retiredfarmer: how many shootings have you read about that have anything to do with pot? Legalize the stuff. It's about time the govt stop treating us citizens like we are their children to be tended. Alcohol is way worsxze and that's legal.
looks again like someone had to tage them by the hand and lead them there but they still screwed it up by not catching anyone or maybe even they know it should be legal and don't wanna bust anyone. either way, it is HIGH time for the state to legalize it so these operations won't be going on and waste taxpayers money. and i'm willing to bet alot of it stays into our good law people hands.
One may want to be a little nervous coming up to one of these fields of weed, I don't think I would hang around, might come up missing if you know what I mean.
we all heard the news regarding california going completely broke. now they are going to be one of the richest states just buy making one senseable decision. they leagalized an herb that was previously illeagle and causing their state millions of dollars in taxes by arresting and fineing the persons who used it. now there are 0 arrest on that subject,=ing 0 jail time =ing millions of tax dollars saved. what part of this does maine not get ? alchole is legal and dosent it cause the same effect as pot ? the same rules could apply; no driving while under the influence, if cought the same rules apply.maine needs to wake up and spend our tax dollars on getting the cocaine, oxy, ect. of our streets. washington county has a alarming drug problem regarding hard core drugs. why dont law makers agree ?
Don't panic, it's organic. I'm with Freedom fighter. Give it to the cancer patients.
Another vote for Freedom Fighter here.
If nobody is ever arrested, I'll be pretty suspicious as to who grew it and why. Convenient that they all escaped.
And if it's not hydro, it ain't anywhere near what grows out west.
Si, senor! No mas hecho en Mexico, ahora hecho en Maine!
The State is in a financial mess so why not sell it to the drug companies so that they can sell it to parmacies so that the people who are legally prescribed pot for pain can benifit from it and so will the state of Maine and maybe taxes, fees and cuts can be reduced?!?! Just a thought!
Albert Einstein is quoted as saying "the difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits".
There should be a new word for how stupid cannabis prohibition is. We as Maine people just spent thousands
of dollars to prevent tens of millions in pot-ential revenue, effecting growers, trimmers, brokers, distributers,
and retailers all of whom are localpeople who would spend money that would eventually be taxed via new clothes
and other local purchases, while simultaneously increasing the power and influence
of dangerous drug cartels. When in God's good name will the day of infinite stupidity end?
Imagine if pot was legal, how much revenue that 9 million dollar crop would generate for the state. Not to mention how much money would be SAVED by not having to bring in all those law enforcement agencies/agents. Wish I was down wind.....
Legalize it!!!! To debate this issue is so stupid!
Ahhhh. Gleaning info. "Border Patrol" included in the bust. Maybe some of the blueberry rakers had a sideline going on. Hmmmmmmmm. Could be Mexican Cartel work. But insufficent info for the morons to start blaming all Mexicans.
you know..........of course YOU KNOW..........law enforcement.........will keep some of this for their friends and relatives!
I don't see nine million dollars. Once trimmed, she'll come down some, but law enforcement likes to leave dirt and rocks in the root system when they yank it to up the weight. And they get away with it. This will be a boon to the argument that the MDEA needs more funding. Watch for awhile. Good thing is, while they're doing this, the rest of 'em can harvest with less worry.
we moved from Maine to Mendo County, CA where growing up to 20 plants for medical reasons is legal. Then you're behind someone at the Sheriff's office who needs the tags to register their grow. "How many plants?" asks the clerk. "Uhh, about 150" "What?" says the clerk. So the guy behind you says, "Oh, he means he needs 20 tags, right, dude?" and the first guy says, "Yeah, uhh, right. 20 tags." So the Sherrif's clerk gives him the 20 tags and sends him on his way. And you can't go driving through Mendocino State Forest for a picnic because you might stumble on one of these big grows and get shot. And there is no water because all the illegal grows are diverting it. Even "medically legal" is a waste of tax resources. Make it all COMPLETELY legal. It's the only sensible option.
could someone tell me why we are not voting on this already??
Mexicans.. in MAINE woods?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHAH RIGHT! Keep dreaming! I need a bigger back yard.
It works great for headaches...Legalize the stuff, sell it to folks who need it.
That was some nice lookin' green bud................such a shame to waste such beautiful 'erb. Let the good times roll...........
Tele @ 8:04 you are probably correct that it would be dangerous to stumble across something like this, but I have to admit .... I still have dreams... and this would be a good one. Worst case senerio... with any luck one could at least go "missing" with a smile on their face.
Bangorean do you even no what Hydro is??? Im not so sure you do. Hydro is short for Hydrophonics which is nothing more than an automatic watering system. This alone does nothing for the potency of weed. It only regulates water which is good for growth and will alow the nutrients to do there job. Potency is determined by two things strain of seed and age of plant. Yes a healthy plant is more potent than an unhealthy plant which is why people like to have a hydro system to help keep the plants healthy. co2 is also a big factor for healthy plants, but the food either organic or not is what is most inportant, and this can be used either in a hydro system or not. It really makes no difference its just for convenience. So when you hear the word hydro this is usually mis understood as some sort of hightest weed and it really has nothing at all to do with potency the same results can be achieved with out a hydro system.
Ludwiggin- Hydro is also always grown indoors and never in dirt. It has no smell, well, not like your typical bud. It is very potent, as is all greenbud in comparison to commercial weed.
I think a bunch of Beaners running around them there woods might of looked a little suspicious. They don't quite blend in with the locals. But I did hear the Calais IGA was out of refried beans..
lmfao tele.... pretty much what i meant... let alone someone seeing one running around in the woods....
vchapes you are quite correct. I did not go in to a full blown lecture or classroom training on the growing of pot as it sounds that we both could. It just has always been a peav of mine when someone talks about hydro like that makes all the dif between high test and the comersh so to speek. Granted every little thing helps but the mis understood term Hydro bugs me.
I know what you mean. I was helpin ya out! :)
But again its not the hydro system that makes it potent its the type of weed or strain that your growing in a hydro system that makes the dif. Usualy the indoor varietys are stronger either Indica or sativa both have some real good high test strains.
I'm not a pot smoker myself but I do believe in the medical use 4 it as it's certainly better than alcohol. Why can't the state keep it for the medical perscriptions that Maine gives out for health reasons. If there going 2 perscribe it they should honor the scripts with the pot.
Why why why is the question that we all have. So how do we all make this happen because our government seems to avoid the subject like the plague. How do we get this in to law now!!! I think the people have waited long enough.
The best part is that the growers tried to cover it up by burning it.
That must of been a very interesting fire, even if it wasn't dried I am sure it gave off quite the fragrance.
"The Salvation Army has set up their canteen on site to feed the law enforcement contingent"
Did the officers have the muchies?
People that think marijuana should be legalized are not thinking of the long term impact. If it is legalized people will be smoking it much like they do cigarettes. We used to live next door to someone who would open their back window and smoke it and if I happened to go outside during this time or shortly after the smell would instantly make me violently ill with such a horrible migraine it would feel like my head was going to explode and I would have to run inside and vomit. The smell is strong and so disgusting. I'd rather be sitting in a car full of people chain smoking cigarettes with the windows rolled up then catch a passing whiff of someone smoking marijuana. Having it legalized would created such a horrendous second hand smoke problem and because it is SO MUCH stronger and more putrid AND makes people high it would have a terrible impact on children. People would be smoking it on the sidewalk while walking, in the parks, in their homes with their children around. Legalizing it would be the most idiotic thing imaginable.
I agree with Centaurmyst, the first time that I smelled pot, at a high school dance, I wanted to puke from the smell.
10.5 million dollars, imagine if it was legal and the government had a 10% tax on it. They would have just made 1 1/2 million dollars. Hmm, too bad.
Laws... no smoking in public, while driving... etc. you can smoke it, but do it at some. That way when you get caught smoking a jib walkin down the street you CAN get in trouble for it... but if the fuzz kicks your door in and you're smoking it, oh well, it's ok.
Home i mean...
But how can you tax something like this? It's not a sales tax if it's for personal use... i dont see the taxing ever happening. Maybe we should look at Amsterdam... minus the hookers, we have enough of those in bangor/brewer already.
I don't think the Mexicans have anything to do with the growing operation but if the DEA hired some of the workers to help with the harvest it would go a lot quicker. BTW did you hear about the guy who got drunk and beat up his wife? Yea, we all have but did you hear about the guy who got stoned and beat up his wife....no, more likely he got stoned and forgot to beat up his wife.
Er, Lud, you're trying to preach to the choir. And it's hydroponic, not phonic. Metered water and nutritional supplements, typically without soil, and yes, a lot of it is done out of doors and in the woods. And whether indica, kush, trainwreck, chronic or whatever, you can boost the potency with proper herbiculture. Certainly the acidic soils of Washington County are not good for herbiculture. And I know what hydro means. And I don't grow or smoke.
That said, the best I ever saw was in the early '70's at UMO. Real Acapulco Gold. That strain was eradicated by the DEA when they were spraying all the crops in Mexico with poisons - what was that stuff?
And the comment from Mendo about "diverting all the water." Gimme a break. All the water is getting diverted to San Fran and south from Mendo and Humboldt rivers. A buddy of mine just walked through Mendo and Humboldt. Have a look at the current National Geographic issue. He had no problems and was never confronted. The problem, as you are well aware, is with the tweakers, and defending against theft by them.
as there is no limit to stupid, even people who do not like pot (like me) know anyhting tropical grown in maine is not real. I learned pot just goiung to high school in central maine woods.the source of this field, thier entire mentality is that of a caked up dopehead in a thorough kill the govt opiate fantasy..refer to chinas opiate past to know what natural drugs did to an entire nation. you stupid stuipid retarded brain munchers. drink water. the headache is called clean.
These postings should give the MDEA all kinds of stuff to waste time on tracking down.
LUDWIGGEN , you said "Yes a healthy plant is more potent than an unhealthy plant". Since rarely would you hear of someone having a hydro system set up that isn't taking good care of the plants and It also give you more control of the nutrients. So yes, in everyday practice, buying hydro will get you more potent smoke.
opiate fantasy? We are not talking about opiates bxr. Weed can actually grow on its own outside in MAINE with NO help whatsoever. Provided the weather is forgiving. Just because someone grows weed doesn't mean they are aiding it, some people don't even touch it, it still grows into a monster! So i guess the poisonous spiders and what not that are coming north, those should be outlawed too since they are not native. Stupid argument. NEXT
Nice Sassy!!
Notice how few pot advocates above have addressed the question of what would probably happen to a hiker who had stumbled onto this big plot of "hemp", and been caught by the humble growers? Every one of these guys would pi$$ their pants when the owners showed up with the firepower. Do you think these humble growers would risk years in jail for a new hiker friend? So much for Peace, Love and a Twinkie.
KEYSTONE COPS! It's rural Washington County. Someone from one family tipped them off, hoping to get back at another family, which might have been siphoning off their drug business, or perhaps cheating on a wife or husband. It got around to other family members, and the perpetrators escaped....LOL Just look at what happened to Joe Tibbetts; RURAL RIVALRIES COMING TO THE SURFACE...... LOL It's the WASHINGTON COUNTY REDNECK MAFIA,at it again....LOL
Ok retired, but HOW many people have 9 million $ worth of pot they are growing? It's not like they are out growing it in a state park. "The site, in Township 37, is about 10 miles off Route 9 in Wesley, covering several square miles of woods and swamps. " I don't know about you but i don't generally hike in swampy areas. So my answer to what would happen is... why are they hiking there, its not hiking area, its private property... hmm
The time has come that pot should be legal...Even if it isn't taxed it would save the State MILLIONS in enforcement and solve the jail overcrowding issues..Those planes , helos and personal tromping around and flying over the woods all summer cost ALOT of money..Money that SHOULD be in my pocket....Time for another petition effort ??? That 10 million that will be lost by destroying that harvest will be replaced by pot from the cartel before the fire goes out and the 10 million will go to the drug cartels instead of being spent here....Time for some common sense....
Bet you never thought you'ld here that from conservative Dittohead , did ya ??? LOL...
See, vc cannot answer the question. He knows. With that much money to be had and jail time at risk by anyone- Mexican cartel, Canadian cartel, the Red Neck Downeast mafia, or Joe Cool-- a hiker would probably be listed as missing.
SHE..... reguardless of what happens, this is not a common situation. Most people have 10-20 plants here there and everywhere. SOOOO if someone was hiking in someone elses back yard, chances are they are NOT a random hiker.
If i had plants or not, if someone was in my back yard we will have issues... Been there done that.
What a waste of resources....All those cops looking for pot plants....How about going after international war criminals like Bush, et al....or at least some corporate criminals
It's not that its a waste of resources... we have too many cops with nothing to do. If they would stop taking on more and more and more forces and wasting more and more tax dollars, the things they DO accomplish would probably be better received. I'd be interested to know exactly how many officers or dea were there, and how many of them were NOT needed what-so-ever.
I haven't seen anyone mention it, but it's paper company land. And theorizing about somebody hiking around there is dumb. It's a swamp with high spots, basically, which is probably why it was selected. Bugs must've been miserable.
And farmboy, there's a difference between "alcoholic and druggie" and everyone I know that uses occassionally. I just don't care for it anymore, myself, but I think that's age. How's that for honest? Now you be honest. You know what's best for everyone else, don't you? The stuff is WAY less dangerous than alcohol and cigs.
I just saw a Mick Jagger video and he looks pretty good for 66 after decades of drug abuse, plus the guy's got amazing moves! I think he's clean now though.
From what I see it is quite a little art to growing weed, in order to correctly do it. I once watched a video on the web and it was a lot of work from start to finish.
Good job Bangorean
jkershaw- hahaha
It can be tele... but it can also be no work what so ever... depends on your angle. It'll still be just a potent, but wont produce as many buds if you don't tend it.
Hopefully the EPA doesn’t get involved, someone may of killed an endangered frog while in there retrieving these plants. I surprised they didn’t need a permit..
Legalize. This represents nothing more than a waste of police resources and lost revenue from taxing marijuana sales. Destroing this crop and jailing the growers does nothing to improve the quality of anyone's life or better our society in any way (except of course for the cops drawing overtime to burn this field, but according to the other front page story, that's a waste of money that should be inluded in the piglet book). Wake up Maine, you can't have it both ways.
Thems "Revenooers" rait their Mista.........Whos blaming the Mexicans anyway???
some people would have volunteered to clear for free..... 60 cops????
does that mean it will wind up as medical mariquana, free of charge to the medical people? while they inturn sell it to the public????
"Bangor Hydro." That's hilarious.
I dont know what you people think 'medical marijuana' is... but the doctors are NOT supplying it. OBVIOUSLY. You can't run over to the hannaford and grab a satchel... You are written a letter stating that you are allowed use of marijuana for medical purposes. There are other rules around it, how much you can be in posession of etc etc.
MEANWHILE the state hands out methadone for free... Right... This bust has a huge impact on Maine's drug problem...
$2,000.00 used as ' rule of thumb '? Police figure this crop worth $3,000.00 per plant?? In Your Dreams! ! !
This is Propaganda with a capital P. There ain't no way no weed is worth that much coin!
For those who think the Mexican Mafia is in Maine doing this, you better hope it's just some local entrepreneurs, because if it is Mexican Mafia, crime will start to look like California and the desert South West in Maine soon. Remember as Prohibition does it's work , price goes up and as price goes up the hard core criminals get involved and as the hard core criminals get involved, violence goes up and so does Fire Power.
Prohibition, It STILL does not work.
I'm glad they haven't caught the farmers of what looks like a beautiful crop, Man how I would of love to seen a few of the patches.. Do you realize just how many cancer patients could be helped with all that they say will be destroyed,,, What a darn horrible shame,,,What a shame they this was spotted, I fear it will discourage more farmers from coming to this state to grow the herb..I have to say again and stress it,,, WHAT A HORRIBLE CRIME IT IS THAT THEY ARE DESTROYING ALL OF THIS CROP, WHEN IT COULD BE USED TO HELP THE CANCER PATIENTS, WHAT A HORRIBLE SHAME, I CAN ONLY PRAY THAT ONE DAY THINGS WILL CHANGE FOR EVERYONE WHO KNOWS THE GOOD IN THIS HERB THAT MOTHER NATURE GAVE US TO DO GOOD WITH, SO SAD
The day Mexicans take over Maine will be a day when the devil hands out popsicles. If this was lisbon street and we were talking Somalians... i might agree but Maine WOODS?!?! Harvest/Hunting... hmmm... i wouldn't want to be a mexican! But i do agree that those plants are probably not worth 3k a plant....
The law official grow this and said that a bust happen just to cover there illegal action, as CA. IS ABOUT $400.00 TO $500.OO HALF POUND THERE AND THE LAW OFFICIAL OF AMERICA IS LIKE KINDERGARDEN PEOPLE TO THINK WE ARE STUPID AS THEY ARE TO BELIEVE WE ARE 'N' LAW OFFICIAL WOULD NOT LEGALIZE THIS DUE TO THE MEDICAL PILLS COST FOR THERE POCKET.
Miamijohn... wtf does that mean??? Your post makes no sense.
And $400 - $500 a half pound?!?! Where do u buy your weed?!?! Try $300 or so an OUNCE... only if its greenbud... Must be that miami weed you're talking about.
What racist idiot suggested that this is the work of Mexicans?

I agree that a plant grown in a hydro system has been taken care of well and should lead one to believe it would be of good quality but my point was that there is no breed named hydro. That is just a method used to grow with. And again I will say that breed and age is what makes a plant more potent not water!
And to reply to some other comments. It is very possible to get a pound per plant in maine. And they are not tropical plants those would need to be grown inside.
Bangorean all the soil in maine as far as i no is on the acid side, I dont no of any alkline soil in Maine but i could be wrong on this as I have only been in certain areas of the state. But thats why they make lime so you can change that acid soil to a nice neutral medium. And as far as your herbiculture theory......Maybe??? I am sure there are some methods that could increase the potency if your some chemist with years of experiance there might be some ways to increace the potency of a breed. But for the most part its all about seed and age. I wont call you wrong on this because there is new things out there every day and maybe your right. I mean they got pumkins that weigh in at what 500-900 pounds now, and alot of hybreds so hay why not. But again its not in the water its what you put in the water lol
There really is no 'wrong' way to grow weed... so to speak.
Centaurmyst, if you did your research. And I doubt you have. You would know that Cannabis is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, AND ANTI EMETIC.
"An antiemetic is a drug that is effective against vomiting and nausea. Antiemetics are typically used to treat motion sickness and the side effects of opioid analgesics, general anaesthetics and chemotherapy directed against cancer."
Of course you're just going to dismiss this right?
dude man..relaaax! What something to eat?
Lud, if you're usin' seeds, you're missin' the boat. A very prominent Bangor person - a name you'd recognize - had a relative die of cancer quite a few years ago. I'd say near 20 years now. The relative was supplied with good greenbud - the person had never smoked before - that helped alleviate the pain and side effects of the poisons of chemotherapy. The person was very grateful for the weed. It still goes on, and will go on forever. . .
And why waste all those stems and shade leaves? There must be 100 pounds of hash available there once the buds are trimmed!
I guess they were tipped off that they were about to be busted.Say inside?Do you really think that all that pot is going to be destroyed? Its time to legalize it.They should sell some of it to cover the cost of this operation instead of billing it to the tax payers
Ya, I think I'll make up some "BANGOR HYDRO" Tee-shirts!
Who's paying for all the overtime for all the game wardens, border patrol, sheriffs, etc rounding up the plants? Now what kind of government agency can afford to pay that kind of overtime with the budget situation the State is in? Seems to me that the fiscally prudent thing is to bring in volunteers.
I'm amazed at the stupidity of law enforcement at flying in first before sealing the exits and sending in ground forces. It would be interesting to know if the tip alluded to how big an operation this was.
That area is a big ATV riding area. I'm surprised that an ATVer or bear hunter never ran across this operation. Perhaps they did and never made it out alive?
Quite an interesting story in how this could go on undetected for so long. Where are our game wardens and other busy bodies who are supposed to be so adept at knowing what's going on in the woods at all times? The "crew" being in there all summer must have created quite the herd path into the heart of the operation that any professional busy body could pick up on. Make no mistake about it, the Maine woods are full of busy bodies.
How much taxpayer money has this "sting" wasted, I wonder? Pathetic.
Sounds like a couple of you know what you are doing...:)
Somebody forgot to pay their protection money to law enforcement.
rwow finnly they wasted more money then they did in milo with 52 officers showing up for one guy witha pistol and rifle. glad to here we can coem of the chopping block as the biggest waste of state funds now
I thought Hollywood Slots was growing it.... They seem to be growing more crime.....
All of the money that this crop would have created will be spent on buying imported columbian , wich only makes the columbian cartels even stronger ,so I can send my sons to go fight them oneday!!!!!!! GO FIGURE!!!!
If any of you were married to one of the drug agents, you would probably have a clue as to how much they and their families go through. It is small minded to spit out one liner digs. If you knew the things that really happen, you perhaps wouldn'y be so tripe.
Also, what makes you think that what you read in the paper is exactly accurate? There is always something held back to allow more development of the case.
Get real, folks!
Ya. This is killin' a bunch of drug agent's families, this bust. If the public knew how much "probable cause" is manufactured, or carefully "prepared", the AG wouldn't be so "trite". (Tripe is cow's stomach and half of what happened here.)
So what does this article show?
That Maine has the propper weather conditions to grow quality marijuana.
That being a caretaker is a potential full time job.
That marijuana is a extremely lucritive business.
-
What conclusions comes to your minds?
Does current marijuana prohibition make sense?
Wouldnt legalization, regulation, taxation be a refreshing change?
When Maine unemployment is climbing on 10% with no change in sight,
and the State budget gap is millions opon millions in the hole.
And so far the only sollutions look like either raising taxes, or slashing state goverment budgets,
Shouldnt legitimizing the marijuana trade be considered an option.
Yes we Cannabis!
(dough!, *legitimatizing)
Hey bunkerboy...drug agents should know before getting into this line of work how much they will have to go thru during an investigation....and their families are in it for the long haul, too. It isn't one of those....OMG, I have to work late tonight....wait up for me honey. It is their line of work and all involved should realize the sacrifices. Are we supposed to have pity on them?...is that what you're getting at? There are sacrifices with just about every job.
And LOL at blueskies 10:05 post....good one!!

GROW A LITTLE POT AND SAVE THE FAMILY FARM. THE COWS CAN'T SEEM TO DO IT.
Thanks oceanmist! And wont it be nice, when someday Maine will be able to grow Industrial Hemp? Someday, farms and regular Maine landowners, will be able to have a reliable, sustainable, cash crop of Industrial hemp. Our Maine Truckers, would haul the hemp to the humming mills, Big Rigs running on hemp biodisel fuel. Maine Hemp Processors would distribute the processed hemp to Maine Manufactors and businesses, and they would create green friendly products, that could be sold in Maine locally owned stores. Circulating local economies, sustainable living, good paying greenjobs. I look forward to the day.
MDEA, this Buds for you.
And just to be sure I dont confuse anyone, Industrial Hemp is not marijuana, their cousins, but not the same. The difference is in its THC content. Hemp typically has 0.3% THC content. Marijuana has anywhere between 5% and 20% THC content. A person would have to smoke a hemp cigarette the size of a telephone pole to catch a snap.
How much money is being spent to track, and eliminate these crops? 85,000 alcohol related deaths annually in the U.S. of A. A whopping 435,000 due to tobacco. How many deaths a year due to Marijuana? A big fat goose egg. How much of the money used to rid the country of this "evil" substance, could be used to feed the hungry, or give shelter to the homeless...or maybe find a cure for the cancer being caused by legal cigarette smoke...or maybe these resources could be used to prevent some of the 85,000 deaths due to legal alcohol. These cops aren't heroes, they're a waste of time and money...so they can go ahead and puff up their chest with pride all they want. Ever heard the story of the police chiefs new clothes?
Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance.
It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control mans appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes.
A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principals upon which our government was founded." ~Abraham Lincoln~
Heard they burned it last night, also there was only about 3000 plants.....
You heard it here first.....
I agree with "outdoorsman" there is more to this story. Heck, Township 37 is in the middle of Washington County. Just who has been keeping their eyes closed on this one. People living there 24/7 and yet no one knew about it. Someone knew about it and let it continue.
dlaurels , key word is it's out in the middle of know where. Have you ever been there? The men are men and the sheep run scared in that area...
Wow! you guys are mostly all "pot-heads?".....you know damn well that if it was legalized and they taxed it, you'd b#tch about that, too and wish it was illegal again. As far as the tax dollars that could be raised from it, why don't you all GET OFF THE POT and vote for somebody who isn't a Dem into Augusta? I'm considered poverty level...and I still think the worst thing this state has done was give benefits to "poor people". There would be even more stoners sitting around getting high all the time collecting benefits from the Dem-filled state. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MAINE KEEPS VOTING DEMOCRAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAVING THINGS HANDED TO YOU IS NOT GOING TO HELP THE DEFICIT, ECONOMY, OR YOURSELF! IT'S EASIER, BUT NO BETTER. NOW THINK ABOUT WHAT THE H#LL YOU'RE SAYING ABOUT THE WHOLE WEED THING! As far as the medicinal use goes...insane!
Great job guys! Keep up the good work. Wish I could be there to help find the losers who have tended this grow.
Great job to all officers involved. Keep up the good work!!!
You last three jackboots must feel pretty lonely, since comments are running 10 to 1 or more in favor of legalization. Of course, you know an awful lot about it, don't you? Experts? So when your ilk decides to try to take over America, at least we know there'll be 10:1 standing against you. Talk about losers.
Legalize and allow people to grow 2 or 3 plants a year and you solve the problem of drug dealing. Cancer patients will get what they need. The hard drug problem will get much more attention. I once had a bag of seed when pot was cleaned before it was sold, no stems, no seed that you don't need, remember? This was a bread bag from one cleaning and it was full. How many plants do you think I could have grown? You will never eradicate pot. Also why give the government another tax source, They waste what they spend now. And last but not least, the money people would save by growing their own and not having to pay out $160+ out of their budget. Look around you people we all know people who smoke.
I HAVEN`T READ ANYWHERE HOW THEY PLAN TO DESTROY IT. BURNING THAT MUCH COULD CAUSE POTENTIAL HARM TO LOCAL WILDLIFE [ANIMALS].
They say money is the root of all evil..drug money proves that explicitly, accept the evil, get the money$$$ Yah right...that's a solution we should all smoke on...NOT! the fact that this type of farm even existed is an eye opener for Mainers who are still sleeping....Marijuana the gateway drug....check the stats.
All the money and police man power wasted on this? The person in the plane should have minded their own business to begin with! Yes - tax it and sell it legally - let the sick people who benefit from this have it at a discount. But no, they'd rather give us their "legal drugs" that have all sorts of side effects and cost so much money, if you don't have insurance you suffer period. Or they force legitimately ill sick people to buy it illegally but there is no other choice. If you're ill, you can't grow it...planting takes hard work.
The government doesn't want to legalize it for the ill or anyone else for that matter. They make more money by it being illegal. Think of all the pay-offs - it drives the prices up, so the guys at the top get even more money in pay-offs and hush money. At least Canada allows ill people access to the drug. It does help so much - it's not addictive like legal drugs are and it could be sold at an affordable price to people who are ill. But the doctors are afraid to prescribe it, because the DEA rather spend its time digging up pot plants then going after the really violent criminals who are making and selling meth. WE have met labs everywhere which could blow up entire neighborhoods, but I don't see cops like this going after home meth labs.
Every time I read of one of these pot busts, it makes me so angry. All they care about is themselves as usual and making money from it for themselves.
lets see how maine votes on this in nov. medical pots on the ballot. there are so many people in maine who could benifit, from being able to grow a few plants, or actally go to rite aid to fill a script. but so far even though maine passed it a few years ago, you have trouble getting a doc to write a script, trouble finding a pharamcy to fill it, no better off than when it wasnt legal. so theres only one option. leaglize pot. save tax dollors, and go after those drunk drivers, the pill heads, the rapist, murderers, child porners, and leave the pot heads alone. did you ever see anyone arrested because they were stoned? arrested because maybe they had a few joints on them, which is possession, a 250.00 fine. and legally in maine you can have no more than an once in your home. but you can have it.. we,ve come along way from 20 years ago, theres still along way to go. so vote in nov, than ya can complain.
